Phnom Penh - Cambodia
24 to 26 October 2013
After our trek through Hanoi, Hoi An, Ho Chi Minh City and Siem Reap, it was time for a few days of rest and relaxation in a lovely place, filled with peace and tranquility.
White Mansion
Having arrived at the hotel, the stairs in the foyer were being re-decorated. The staff were very apologetic and urged us into the cafe/restaurant area. However, the the fumes were very overpowering especially during the checking in process.
Despite this factor the room given on the 4th floor was a delight. I would describe the room as quirky but still tasteful and see this as open plan living.
We were only staying 2 nights so wanted to get the best out of the city. We approached front of house and they were very helpful. Specifically for advice on good restaurants we could attend and also arranging our city tour the next day. All front of house were amazing.
So the restaurant attended on the first night was Vans, a 10 minute ride from the hotel. This was a superb French style food restaurant and was beyond what we expected. The food was amazing and everything we would expect from this upmarket establishment. We had 3 courses and bottle of wine and I have to say, it was very very reasonable. We loved this place.
Breakfast was the most funny experience in the hotel and although the food was delicious, the staff were amusing. We say this only because they approach was chaotic and it felt they did not seem to know who had ordered what, so food was given to the wrong tables and that food was brought out too quickly, especially when ordering more than one item. This was the only thing that was in-different about the breakfast experience. Otherwise it was great.
Lunch was also nice.
As mentioned the front of house were marvelous and they arranged us a tuk tuk driver for the day. This guy was fantastic and spoke very very good English, his name was Pier (tuk tuk driver number 2). He took us on our city tour and explained the history of each place we visited. He took us to a nice cafe for lunch and we also meant his brother, a tuk tuk driver as well.
We would certainly recommend that if you want a city tour that Pier is your man if you speak English.
We chilled out by the pool and this was also nice and quiet.
Our chosen restaurant on our last night was Malise, taken their by our trusted driver, Pier. We loved this place as well and it was typical Cambodian food but upmarket. Again another recommendation from front of house and again superb restaurant and great food.
On checkout we were allowed to store our bags and use all the amenities on the ground floor. We were advised by front of house that if we ever come back that we should consider booking direct with them as this would be cheaper than booking direct with a booking agent.
This is because the agent takes up to 25% of the booking cost, so another good tip is the check the cost with booking agents then contact the hotel direct for a similar cost or even better.
Again a great stay in Cambodia and we would definitely recommend this hotel.

Malis Cambodian Restaurant
We loved the ambience of this restaurant and believe its best to be seated outside to enjoy the meal. The food was is displayed wonderfully on the plate and is very tasty! Price also reasonable. Our waiter for the evening was helpful and gave us his card Would recommend this establishment.
Van’s Restaurant
We didn't know what to expect but we were not disappointed! The ambience as you walked into this 1st floor establishment was beautiful We were treated with courtesy from the staff and they were always at hand to explain anything on the menu We had a three-course meal and a bottle of wine! We have to say that it was totally amazing and the food was absolutely delicious! This restaurant is a real gem. If you want a good meal at a reasonable price, you will not be disappointed by attending here! Highly recommended!
