Alicante, Spain
Wednesday 31 Aug to Tuesday Sept 2016
Sunshine. Blue skies. Clean beaches. Warm air with an occasional cool breeze. Some good food. Wonderful cultural. Some nice people. A lovely taste of Spain in the Costa Blanca.

Holiday Inn Alicante - Playa de San Juan
I normally stay in boutique hotels; however, as this was a last minute decision in need of a break in the sun, longer than a weekend, I decided to book a holiday in Spain, somewhere new. I was surprised when I saw this worldwide branded hotel were advertising themselves as a 4-star hotel. Previous 4-star hotels have always provided excellent service, excellent facilities with a touch of class without the heavy price tag.
Day three of my six night stay at the Holiday Inn, Alicante and I'm ready to review, and it ain't going to be pretty. As I don't speak Spanish, the frontline staff, especially Reception have made it perfectly clear since I don't speak Spanish they can't be bothered with me.
Whilst attempting to ask questions regarding excursions (or day tours, depending on who you spoke to) other Spanish speaking hotel guests would be spoken to and attended to over the top of me, whilst I am ignored and once their enquiry was completed, I would be returned to, and the look of exasperation and contempt from the Reception staff were all to plain on their face.
Having worked in hospitality for nine years, eight of those behind many a Reception desk, the main reason for your existence is to assist your hotel guest. Providing yes or no answers to questions regarding things to do and see in Alicante is appalling. Where is the assistance? Where are the recommendations? Why aren't Reception staff informed about local attractions, places to go and see? Why are they so reluctant to be polite, helpful and courteous?
Handing me a photocopied piece of paper regarding excursions, written in Spanish, is NOT helpful.
At one point I had to return to my room to retrieve my iPad and use Google Translate to converse, forcing them to communicate and once that tool came out of the bag they suddenly sprung to life, yet they didn't know anything.
To be treated as an inconvenience is utterly appalling. My complete and utter personal apology for not speaking Spanish in your hotel. I won't do it again.
Although this is not completely fair, as the only person who bothered to attempt a friendly interaction was the Housekeeping lady who was very friendly. Five stars to her.
The room is extremely basic, no coffee / tea making facilities, no fridge, with only a room safe, television, air conditioning and beds that roll around the room when attempting to sleep. The wheel locks on the bed base are broken. Oh, and as I'm thinking about the bed, I did ask many times for a double bed, but your unhelpful staff insisted on placing me in a room with two singles pushed together and don't stay together because the locks on the wheels are broken and they roll around the room. The toilet flushes, so we have to be thankful for small mercies.
On a positive note, everything and everyone outside of the hotel complex are friendly, lovely and polite. The people of Alicante are very welcoming and attentive, just don't expect the same from the staff at the Holiday Inn.
I'd rather stay at Faulty Towers.
Monte Benacantil
The climb up Monte Benacantil is not for the faint hearted and should be enjoyed by those with a spirit for trekking up a mountain in the heat of the day. Bring your water bottle with you, it's dry.
Castle of Santa Barbara
The sheer size of this castle and its location is well worth a visit. Spectacular views over Alicante and the ocean brings you to succumb to it's beauty. With so much to explore and learn about its history, the Castle is a great free day out.
Museo de Bellas Artes Gravina (MUBAG)
This Museum is full of wonderful, inspiring and beautiful pieces of art work. Many of Spain's celebrated artists are displayed on the many floors for all to enjoy. Breathtaking pieces of art work that shouldn't be missed.
Rambla de Mendez Nunez
This is a great place to sit and people watch all day. Buy a drink, sit under the palm trees and watch the Rambla people go by. Great fun. Relaxing.
El Portal Taberna & Wines
Clearly a beautiful place for the beautiful people and with beautiful food and beautiful wine, the evening, was, gorgeous. Well appointed and designed with elegant lighting and decor, I was greeted by a big friendly smile and a handshake with a welcome to warm the heart and relax the strain of the day. Everything was effortless, service, wine, food, ordering, and delivery of food and wine. I'm sure behind the scenes the events were busy and frantic, it only makes sense that is what happens in a restaurant with a busy kitchen, but as I sat at my table in a state of bliss, you'd never know. The food was delicious, hot and served up with a stylish smile. The wine was chilled and classic. The atmosphere and background music stylish and contemporary. A dining experience well worth it. Brilliant.
L'Atelier
Having read some great reviews about L'Atelier on TripAdvisor, I decided to book myself in for this experience. And I'm so pleased I did.
Greeted at the door by a warm and friendly smile is always a plus. As a solo diner, I'm aware some people who are also solo diners may want to be seated in the back of the restaurant away from everyone, but I'm not fussed. I have my book and from my experience, I have witnessed too many couples at restaurant tables staring past each other into the abyss, forgetting the art of conversation, but that's another review.
I was sat amongst other diners who were happily chatting away and enjoying their meals. I was eager to enjoy the same.
The menu is simple with a well balanced choice of three courses and added extras should you desire them. The wine menu compliments the food menu very well. The taste in atmospheric music was perfect.
Each course of my closed dinner was perfectly balanced, tasteful and perfect in presentation and size. Delicious.
The staff were attentive and friendly. Everything was a joy to them.
At the end of the night I asked if they could call me a taxi to take me back to my hotel, which they were happy to oblige.
The unexpected entertainment part of the evening brought much laughter and smiles to the other diners in the restaurant, a surprise, yet enjoyable. Dear reader, if you would like to know what the entertainment was, I think you'll need to ask me personally. We all roared with laughter.
El Ensayo Jazz Bar
This is NOT a Jazz Club, it is not a Jazz Bar nor is it anything Jazz related, except the bar is decorated in Jazz pictures and cut in half instruments, unfortunately, it is NOT a Jazz Club.
You will NOT find any Jazz artists here. Not a musician in sight. They do play Jazz CDs, but no jumping, jiving, live Jazz musicians.
I stayed to enjoy the music from their collection of jazz CDs and a burger and beer, only because I had no where else to go. I knew of no where else to go. I tracked down this establishment via Google with the request to "Find Jazz Clubs near me". This little place popped up.
I planned my journey, working out how to get to this place across town over two bus lines in a city I do not know and in a language I don't speak, for me it's a bit of an effort, but an effort one must make when travelling, I understand that, but to be faced with this serious disappointment ruined my evening.
In short, the staff were friendly. The food was ok. The toilets had no toilet seat.
If anyone knows of a Jazz Club in Alicante, could you let me in on the secret, please?
Restaurante Oficina Ricardo Susana
This is a lovely seaside restaurant amongst the rest of the seaside restaurants along the foreshore of the San Juan de Alicante beach, yet it is authentically Italian. Pizzas. Red Wine. Service. Italian waiters. I had to have two desserts, it was that much fun and delicious. This is a good fun foreshore place for a no fuss dinner.
Alicante Tram
Ok. So I'm spoiled for transport choices living in London and I'm not in London, I'm in Alicante. The signage for trams can be misleading and unclear, yet if you're ready to sit it out for 30 minutes between trams, you'll do alright.
The trams are air conditioned, safe, clean and once you're on it, it's easy to know where you're going. The ticket machine is not as clear as you would think it to be. Yet, like many things, I information is displayed with the assumption the traveller has some sense of local knowledge.
